Digital technology now occupies a central place in our lives. It transforms the ways we communicate, work, inform ourselves, learn, and participate in civic life. But this transformation also comes with new challenges related to the protection of freedoms, privacy, online security, and equitable access to technology.
Through its program “Digital Rights”, ID Africa works to promote and protect fundamental rights and freedoms in the digital environment.
Our vision
ID Africa believes that fundamental rights must be protected both in the physical space and in the digital space. Freedom of expression, access to information, privacy protection, personal data security, and civic participation must be exercised in a digital environment that is free, open, secure, and accessible to all.
The “Digital Rights” program is thus part of an approach of awareness-raising, education, advocacy, and capacity building to enable citizens to better understand their rights and to better protect themselves in the digital universe.
Our objectives
The program pursues several objectives:
- To raise awareness among citizens about rights and freedoms in the digital environment;
- Enhance knowledge on personal data protection and privacy ;
- Promote freedom of expression and access to information on the Internet ;
- Prevent and combat online violence and abuse, including hate speech, harassment, and various forms of cyber violence ;
- Strengthen the capacities of journalists, media professionals, youth, civil society organizations, and community actors on issues related to digital rights ;
- Encourage responsible and secure use of digital tools ;
- Contribute to dialogue and advocacy for public policies that respect human rights in the digital space.
Our main areas of intervention
1. Education and awareness of digital rights
ID Africa develops information and awareness actions to help citizens better understand their rights on the Internet. These actions particularly focus on freedom of expression, privacy, personal data protection, access to information, and digital security.
2. Privacy and personal data protection
At a time when personal data has become a strategic resource, its protection is a major issue. The program helps raise awareness among users about best practices to better protect their personal information and digital identity.
3. Digital security and citizenship
The program encourages the adoption of responsible and safe behaviors on the Internet. This includes strengthening users' knowledge about digital risks, security practices, information verification, and the protection of accounts and devices.
4. Freedom of expression and access to information
The Internet is an important space for expression, information, and citizen participation. ID Africa works to promote a digital environment in which everyone can inform themselves, express themselves, and participate in public debate while respecting fundamental rights.
5. Combating online violence
The program pays particular attention to the various forms of violence and abuse committed or amplified in the digital space: cyberbullying, threats, intimidation, non-consensual sharing of private content, hate speech, and other violations of individuals' rights.
6. Capacity building
ID Africa organizes training sessions, workshops, conferences, campaigns, and meetings aimed at actors who use or intervene in the digital space. Special attention is given to youth, women, media professionals, civil society organizations, and community actors.
